Residents at Loveday Kensington recently took part in a Traditional Chinese Fan Dance Exercise session, exploring movement through rhythm, balance and coordinated gesture.
The afternoon combined guided movement with the flowing visual patterns created by the fans themselves, drawing on traditional dance techniques connected to Chinese cultural performance and exercise traditions. As residents moved through a sequence of exercises, the opening and movement of the fans created changing shapes and rhythm throughout the room.
Fan dance has long been associated with coordination, control and expressive movement, with gesture closely linked to music and timing. Sessions such as this encourage concentration and physical engagement while also offering an opportunity to experience cultural traditions through movement and practice.
