Taira Olaia Larranaga Iraola, Care Assistant
What’s a misconception about your position?
A common misconception about working in the care industry is that our role is limited to practical support. It’s a lot more personal than that. We become companions, listeners and advocates for the residents we look after, helping improve their overall wellbeing and quality of life.
Our role isn’t just to care for someone’s physical needs. Psychological and emotional care is just as important. As carers, it’s vital we offer residents reassurance and make them feel valued, respected, and connected. For me, building meaningful human connections isn’t an extra part of the job – it’s at the heart of it.
What attracted you to Loveday?
I was drawn to Loveday’s vision of delivering exceptional care through professionalism, warmth and kindness. I’m inspired by the attention to detail at Loveday, which is reflected in every aspect of the residence and helps create such a high standard of care and hospitality.
There’s a genuine commitment to recognising the individuality, dignity, and value of every person, every day.
What’s an accomplishment you’re really proud of?
Something I am most proud of is the strong relationships I have built with residents. Supporting them from day one to helping them adapt to a new environment is so rewarding.
I am also proud to help both residents and their families feel part of the Loveday community. Through active listening, meaningful conversations, and empathy, I aim to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable, valued, and truly at home.
How would you spend 30 minutes of free time?
I grew up surrounded by nature, so I love spending time outdoors. For me, having 30 minutes to myself means getting out into green spaces.
I also love reading – it’s much more than just a pastime. I truly enjoy immersing myself in a good book – it’s definitely my favourite way to disconnect from the outside world.
When I have more time, I also really enjoy a good swim. It’s one of those activities that gives me the best of both worlds. It’s a workout that keeps me active and energised, whilst also helping me to slow down and reset.
What do you want people to know about a career in care?
Caregiving is a profession built on skills, knowledge, values and behaviours. These elements give true meaning to the role and are essential in delivering highly tailored care of the highest standard, shaped around each individual. As care continues to evolve, carers must also be adaptable and confident in managing increasingly diverse and complex situations.
What is your motto or personal mantra?
In social care, it is not the quantity of what we do that matters most, but the kindness, dedication and heart behind it.
