Craftsmanship & Creative Practice at the Royal Hospital Chelsea

Craftmanship and creativity

Residents recently visited the Royal Hospital Chelsea to explore Connecting Creativity, an exhibition at the Prince Philip Building curated by Grace Holliday, Artist in Residence across Loveday. The exhibition brought together artwork created by the Chelsea Pensioners, ranging from detailed studies to expressive works shaped by individual style and experience.

Beyond the exhibition itself, the visit offered a closer look at making as a working practice. Residents toured the workshops across the site, where traditional crafts including haberdashery, leatherwork and pottery continue to be carried out by hand. The precision and finish of the work on display reflected years of skill and discipline, with each workshop retaining its own distinct atmosphere and methods.

The afternoon provided an opportunity to observe craftsmanship not as heritage alone, but as something active, practical and continually evolving.
